Walking Time Calculations for the National Three Peaks 24 Hour Challenge
Use the WotzWot Walking Time Calculator to estimate your walking times for the 3 Peaks Challenge:
The Walking Time Calculator uses Naismith's rule and Tranter's corrections to estimate walking time based on the distance, the height gained, your fitness and the conditions.

See the instructions on the Walking Time Calculator page for setting your fitness level.

The links in the table take you to pre-configured calculations for the three mountains for fitness levels 2, 3 and 4.  If you are at fitness level 1, you are probably a fellrunner and won't need a calculator to tell you what you can do.  Fitness level 2 times are very fast times, and few people can achieve them.  If you are at fitness level 3, then you could probably do with getting just a little fitter.  If you are at fitness level 4, you will see that you need to do some serious training!  If you are at fitness level 5 or 6, then this challenge probably isn't for you!

The 3 walking routes covered in the table are Ben Nevis from the Glen Nevis visitor centre, Scafell Pike from Wasdale Head, and Snowdon from Pen-y-Pass.

Ben Nevis Ben Nevis Ben Nevis
Scafell Pike Scafell Pike Scafell Pike
Snowdon Snowdon Snowdon
It is sometimes suggested that you should aim for 5 hours on Ben Nevis, 4 hours on Scafell Pike and 4 hours on Snowdon, but this only leaves 11 hours travelling time.  When we did the challenge, the traffic in Wales meant our travelling time (including stops) was about 11 hours 45 minutes, so those walking times would have meant failure for us. It is better to aim for 4 hours 30 minutes on Ben Nevis and 3 hours 45 minutes on each of the other two. That leaves a full 12 hours for travelling and stops.  Fortunately our walking times were half an hour better still, so we finished with 45 minutes to spare.
